Back to school

Posted August 13, 2014 in Community Featured, West Des Moines

West Des Moines Students go back to school on Aug. 20 and, with that, the library sees one of the upticks in business that it experiences at different times through the year.

Coinciding with school’s start this year, the library has contracted with Unique Management, a collection agency out of Indiana, to start contacting those very few patrons in our community who have more than $25 worth of fines and still have library materials in their possession. The public should be aware that Unique Management has credit reporting authority, and we’d hate to have that sneak up on anyone and show up in their credit report. So, it’s simple: If you think you or someone you know has outstanding fines or lost library books somewhere, consider taking care of it and passing word along.

Reminder: The library is closed on Sundays until after Labor Day. The library will also be closed Monday, Sept. 1 for Labor Day.

Here are some events or programs going on in August, some of which require registration and some of which do not:

Adults
M.Y.S.A: Meditation, Yoga, Spirituality and Ayurveda: Wednesday, Aug. 13, 6 p.m. Professor Sitaraman of Amity University, New Delhi, will discuss “exotic” Indian practices from the point of view of someone who was raised in the culture that produced them. In the past, Professor Sitaraman has spoken on this same subject at the United Nations. No registration required.

Writer’s Club: Second and fourth Saturdays of the month. For accomplished or aspiring writers — any writing style, any genre. Informal meetings, writing exercises, sharing work and constructive criticism are all part of the program. Call Shirley Houghtaling at 515-222-3413 for more information.

Teens
Teen Craft Night: Leftovers for You: Thursday, Aug. 21, 6 p.m. We have lots of craft supplies left over from crafts gone by; teens between the ages of 11 and 19 are invited to come and help us use them up by re-making crafts from the past or making up something new.
