January 19, 1926 – August 9, 2014
William “Bill” Henry Kunz, 88, passed away from this life due to complications resulting from cancer on August 9, 2014, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. His family was by his side. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at McLaren’s Resthaven Cemetery.
Bill was born on January 19, 1926, in Wesley, Iowa, to Otto and Anna (Matern) Kunz. He graduated from Dowling High School in 1943. Thereafter, he served as Corporal in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Germany on the Queen Mary during World War II.
After returning from war in Europe, he soon met the love of his life, Doris Marie Fehrle. After first saying, “no”, he charmed Doris into courting him. His persistence prevailed as they joined hands in holy matrimony on May 7, 1949, and had the joy of sharing over 65 years of marriage together. Bill had a 44-year career working as a Pressman for Meredith-Burda. His farming talents also contributed to putting food on the table for his growing family.
In his younger years, Bill enjoyed bowling, fishing, ice fishing, hunting and playing golf. He was handy with tools and enjoyed carpentry work. His biggest accomplishment in that area was building the garage at their current residence, but his greatest mission in life was taking care of those he loved. Bill often enjoyed playing blackjack at a local (or distant) casino and was an avid reader of “the game”.
Bill is survived by his wife Doris, his children Christine (Jerry) McClelland and Roger (Sally) Kunz both of Urbandale, Conrad (Rebekah Burnett) Kunz of Des Moines, Cynthia Vuper and Mary Kunz, both of Ankeny. He is also loved and remembered by nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Curtis Kunz (San Jose, California) and his eight siblings – Jule Kunz (Wesley, Iowa), Lucille Kessler (Marshalltown, Iowa), Gordon “Steve” Kunz (Waterloo, Iowa), Fran Franzen (Des Plaines, Illinois), Louise Pace (Austin, Texas), Lewine Kunz (Johnston, Iowa), Mary Oakley (Sandyville, Iowa) and Jerry Kunz (Ankeny, Iowa).
The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Tuesday at Iles-Westover Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill’s memory may be directed to St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
