Shirley Polich, 84, passed away August 6, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A memorial service for Shirley will be held Tuesday, August 12, at 11 a.m., at Ankeny Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors beginning at 10 a.m. A private inurnment will follow at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
Shirley was born in Akron, MI on April 20, 1930 to Ray and Louise Fritz. She attended nursing school, where she met her husband, John. The two were married October 13, 1951 and she assisted John in his pediatric medicine clinic for several years in both Michigan and Iowa. The two spent many years in Des Moines before retiring to Las Vegas and Georgetown, TX, and returned to central Iowa in 2012. In her free time, Shirley enjoyed golf, computing, and sewing.
Shirley is survived by her husband; four children: Mark (Victoria) of Indianola, Mike (Terry Fankhauser) of Urbandale, Lou (Kathy) of Cassville, WI, and Maria (Rob) Schweers of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; a great grandson; and a sister. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Leonard Fritz.
The family expresses sincere appreciation for the care Shirley received at Mill Pond Care Center and Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
