I’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is that Ames Public Library will be closed Aug. 18 through Sept. 13. The good news is that the library will be back home and better than ever September 14!
The grand reopening at 1 p.m. on Sept. 14 will celebrate the new expansion and renovation of the building at 515 Douglas Ave., which has been home to Ames Public Library for 110 of Ames’s 150-year history. The renewed library will open its doors following the program.
There’s even more good news for people who want to get involved in the move back to 515 Douglas Ave. The library will celebrate the start of the move with a ceremonial book brigade Sunday, Aug. 17 at 4 p.m. All ages are invited to help us pass 14 specially selected books along a human chain from the temporary location to the renewed library. There will be entertainment along the route on Main Street, and afterwards the celebration will continue at Bandshell Park. There will be fun for all ages, including free performances by indie rock band Doctor Murdock, hip hop artist Kris Clarke, storyteller Maureen Korte and local Indian dance group ISU Raas. (Groups of 20 or more that are planning to participate in the brigade are encouraged to contact us in advance by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.)
If you would also like to get involved behind the scenes, there will be many opportunities to help with the move itself. We’ll need volunteers for everything from unshelving and reshelving books to holding doors open to driving trucks. To find out how you can help, call (515) 239-5663 or e-mail email@example.com
While staff and volunteers move everything to the renewed library and prepare for the grand reopening, the library and bookmobile will be completely shut down Aug. 18 – Sept. 13. Be sure to stock up before we close. Nothing will be due while we are closed, and fines will not increase for any overdue items you may already have. The website, catalog and e-books will be available aside from some short downtime while computers and connections are moved.
The wait will be well worth it. Because of the support of our community and the passion of hundreds of staff members and volunteers, the renewed library will continue to be a well-loved treasure of Ames for years to come.
