Pat Olson

Patricia Olson passed away peacefully in Des Moines on August 4, 2014. She was born to Dr. and Mrs. R.J. Joynt in Le Mars, IA. Pat attended Le Mars High School, where she was a champion snare drummer and wrote the class poem. She came to work in Des Moines where she met Cliff Olson. Pat worked at the Unemployment Commission. Pat and Cliff got married in Brownwood, Texas, while Cliff was in the service.

Pat and Cliff had four children: Jim (Meredith), Tom (Louie), Tim (Toni), and Polly (Jim Porter). She worked at Ingersoll Variety, Stanley Johnson Interiors, and as a mediator for Polk County, before Crestview Acres Retirement Home, where she stayed as administrator for over 25 years. Pat was “Mother of the Year” for the University of Iowa and “Citizen of the Year” for West Des Moines. She belonged to W.D.M. Human Services Board and Chapter G.H.-P.E.O. Pat was a Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines. She loved volunteering at Living History Farms and dressing dolls for the Salvation Army Christmas program where she won several prizes. Pat arranged for Rosalyn Carter to visit Crestview while she was the first lady.

She loved butterflies, quiz shows, Scrabble, merry-go-rounds, family cruises, but most of all her family of nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua, Hillary, Hannah, Anders, Tim, Annie, Patrick, and Jamie (all of whom she adored); ten great-grandchildren; and sister, Peg.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cliff; son, Tom; brother, Bob Joynt; sister, Maryellen Thoman; and two brothers-in-law.

Patty had a keen mind, a great sense of humor, a strong religious faith, and a generous nature. Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Iowa City Hospice, or Lalmba.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines followed by burial at Resthaven Cemetery, where she will be buried next to her beloved husband, Cliff, who always called her “Doll.” Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with a Rosary Service at 6 p.m.
