Habitat’s Rock the Block® Blitzes the Capitol East Neighborhood

Posted July 31, 2014 in Web Exclusives

DES MOINES, IOWA (July 30, 2014) – Alongside hundreds of volunteers and homeowners, Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity (GDM Habitat) is blitzing to repair homes and clean-up Des Moines’ Capitol East neighborhood. From July 31 to August 2, GDM Habitat’s Rock the Block® program will complete 15 homeowner-occupied repair projects.

Rock the Block® is a focused housing outreach program that allows residents, partner organizations, volunteers and GDM Habitat to work together to assist low-income residents with needed repair, maintenance, weatherization, safety, accessibility and beautification of homes. Each Rock the Block® event occurs in a targeted neighborhood where major rehabilitation and new construction are already underway or planned for the near future, and where residents and stakeholders agree to work closely with GDM Habitat to improve their community.

In a unique public-private partnership with the City of Des Moines, the event will also include a Neighborhood Blitz Cleanup, providing residents the opportunity to bring debris and unwanted items to dumpsters stationed in the neighborhood.

“We are very excited about this event, as it will be our first large event in the Capitol East neighborhood and our first Neighborhood Blitz Cleanup with the City. Our volunteers are looking forward to working with the homeowners,” said Les Stohs, GDM Habitat’s Rock the Block® Program Director. “The residents have been very involved in the process and seem excited about it as well. We always need volunteers and hope more community members will join us this week to be a part of this neighborhood revitalization project.”

GDM Habitat’s Rock the Block® program will assist more than 100 families in 2014, allowing families to live safely in their homes. Projects may include building ramps and door modifications, repairing roofs, porches, siding, windows, driveways and sidewalks, insulating, weather stripping, painting, landscaping and more. Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry that brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Hard-working families apply for partnership with Habitat for Humanity based on three criteria: need for housing, ability to pay and willingness to partner. At closing, families purchase their home through a 20-year, no-profit mortgage. In addition to creating homeownership, GDM Habitat is focused on neighborhood revitalization through its Rock the Block® program, which assists residents with repair, maintenance and beautification of homes.
