Mary Ellen Hamer, age 74, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Rev. Dennis Bailey of First United Methodist Church in Carroll officiating. Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at

Born on October 25, 1939 in Denison, Iowa, she was the daughter of Cornelius and Elsie (Hansen) Schroeder. She grew up in Schleswig and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1957. Mary worked for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company in Omaha and then IBP in Denison before she moved to Carroll in 1972. She was a home maker while her children were growing up. She went to work for the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home as a secretary in 1975 and retired in 2010. She enjoyed traveling, cross stitch, going to card club, bowling, and spending time with her family and many good friends.

Mary is survived by a daughter Deena Bachman of Long Beach, Mississippi; a son Dion Hamer and his wife Denise of Carroll; seven grandchildren: Chessa Seddon and her husband Chad of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Anthony Vanderheiden of Carroll, Heather Jeffrey and her husband Brandon of Long Beach, Mississippi, Aaron Vanderheiden and his wife Sara of Lafayette, Colorado, and Danny Hugeback of Lafayette, Colorado; five great grandchildren: Noah, Kennedy, Jemma, Amelia, and Sammy; a brother Tom Schroeder and his wife Nancy of Las Vegas, Nevada; and a nephew Cory Schroeder of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a son Shane Hamer in 2008, and a grandson Jacob.
