New!! Teen “Maker Camp,” July 8 – August 8
Tonja received a grant from Google to have a “Google+ Maker Camp” for teens right here in Winterset. Join young inventors and artists from around the world on Google+ to make awesome projects, go on epic virtual “field trips,” and meet the world’s coolest makers …

Maker Camp inspires you to embrace your inner maker, get your hands dirty, fix some things, break some things, and have a lot of fun doing it. The program is for teens, and it is FREE!!! Go to makercamp.com to register. After registering, if you don’t already have a Google account, you need to create one. Join Google+ and follow “Make.” There are 30 days of camp, much of which is done online. Meet with Tonja at the Library on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1:00 pm, starting July 8. Call Tonja at 462-1731 with questions. Join us – you will love the t-shirts!
Winterset is one of twelve lucky sites in Iowa. On July 8, the teens made stomp rockets & launchers. One of the teens turned into the teacher & taught the group how to solder. If you haven’t joined the group yet, what are you waiting for? Just come to the Library on Tuesdays & Fridays at 1:00. You will love the T-shirts, and we are getting more of them to fit all sizes.
“Fizz, Boom, Read” Summer Reading Games for all ages through July
Children from infants through 5th grade, spin the wheel and read, read, read. Prizes include T-shirts provided by Union State Bank, tickets to Blank Park Zoo, and a party at City Park. For each 5 books read after the 15th book, you get to dive into the treasure chest and pick your own prize. Teens, when you complete your first bingo card, get a free ice cream cone. The more bingo cards you complete, the more chances for our great prizes: grand prize is a Kindle Fire, and first prize is a pizza party for you and 10 friends/family in the Library meeting room. Adults, the more you read, the more chance for prizes – each fiction book gets 1 ticket, and each nonfiction book gets 2 tickets. Prize-winners are drawn every week. Sign up now – the summer is young!
Party at the Park, August 2, 5-7:00 pm – Summer Reading Program Grand Finale
For everybody who participated in the Summer Reading Program (children, teens & adults), head to the City Park on August 2, from 5-7:00 pm. Children will receive their invitation after reading their 10th book for the summer. Adults and teens are invited when they participate in the Summer Reading Program. Please call Ann at 462-1731 to RSVP, so we know how much picnic food we need!
Book Discussion Group, July 24, 7:00 pm
The Book Discussion Group meets on the fourth Thursday evening each month. In July, the book for discussion will be “Little Wolves,” by Thomas Maltman. This is the book selected for All Iowa Reads, 2014, by the Iowa Center for the Book. Join us on July 24 at 7:00 pm for the discussion, which will be led by JoEllen Giles. It is free and open to the public, and all are welcome.
Great March for Climate Action to present program, August 9, 6:30 pm
Marchers in the Great March for Climate Action are making their way across the USA from Los Angeles to Washington DC. They walk about 15 miles per day, and they are currently in Nebraska. The group will be in Winterset on August 9, and will present a program with the opportunity for questions and answers at 6:30 pm. Please join us in the Library Meeting Room. The program is free and open to the public.
Cooking with Annie
Annie is taking a break from the cooking program for the month of July. This is due mainly to construction use of the Library meeting room. It will be such a pleasure to have all systems up and running again, when our repairs are completed. And Annie will cook again!!!
Toddlers, we know you are busy, but don’t forget to bring your parents to Toddler Tuesdays for ages 0-2 on Tuesdays at 10:30 am. For preschoolers ages 3 and up, Library Story-Times are on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:30. The Library loves to see these little ones who are learning so rapidly in every setting. At the Library, besides meeting new friends, they are also learning to love good stories, and how to pay attention in a group setting — good preparation for Kindergarten! Parents, due to our upcoming construction project, please call the Library on the morning of our story-times to make sure that we will be holding the program.
Community Coffee meets Fridays at Zion Church
Community coffee is held every Friday morning 9-10:00 am. We had to move the coffee group for the summer construction. Zion Church basement is the place to be. We thank the Museum for allowing the coffee group to use the facility.
Library Repairs – Please Pardon our Mess
We intend for the Library to be open as usual, as much as possible, during the substantial repair project. We will have our usual Summer Reading Program for all ages. Watch for signage on the sidewalks to guide you into the Library. For the most current information, please watch the Madisonian, the Library web-site www.winterset.lib.ia.us, and “friend” the Winterset Public Library on Facebook. And please do use the phone to find out if we are open. Currently, we are able to use the front door into the Library. The back parking lot is blocked. If anyone walks in to use the east book return, we will find your returned books. Remember, there’s a book return in the lobby accessible from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm Mon-Thurs, and 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Friday & Saturday.
