Janice Lemke, 85, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2014, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Grimes with burial to follow at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
Janice was born on July 31, 1928, in Cedar County, Iowa to Rudolph and Edna (Hein) Ahrens. She married Delvin Lemke on November 26, 1947, in Princeton, Iowa. They made their home in the Princeton area and moved to Grimes in 1955. Janice worked at the Beaver Valley Canning Factory and later retired from Pioneer Hi-bred in 1985. In retirement she worked part time at the Dallas Center-Grimes Schools.
Janice, the “Pop Can Lady”, also enjoyed gardening, bicycling, crocheting, and her friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with family.
Janice is survived by her children, Connie (Tom) McClure of Adel, Pam (Garold) Conrad of Perry, Gale Lemke of Dallas Center and Gene (Laurie) Lemke of Ankeny; ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, her brother Gene Ahrens of Grass Lake, MI, her half-sister, Eunice Hinkley of Wheatly, Ontario, Canada and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brothers, Wesley and Dallas Ahrens.
The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at Iles-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice or AHeinz57 Pet Rescue and Transport. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
