Hot days, cool programs

Posted July 02, 2014 in Community Featured, Johnston

The weather’s heating up, and so are we at Johnston Public Library. There’s still time to sign up for summer reading clubs for all ages. The idea is pretty simple: read books and win awesome prizes. While you’re at the library, make sure to check out these hot summer reading programs for kids, teens and adults in the month of July.

Programs for kids
Come to the library after hours for Amazing Stargazing from 8:45-10:30 p.m. The Des Moines astronomical society will bring their four telescopes for viewing Saturn, Mars and a whole lot of stars. Register at www.johnstonlibrary.com. On July 14 at 1 p.m., kids ages 6-10 are invited to join us to do experiments at the Kitchen Science program. Register by calling the library at 515-278-5233 beginning July 7. Science of Illusion workshop on July 18 at 10:30 a.m. is a must-see for kids ages 8 to 13. Learn how magical illusions are done in this class with magician Rick Eugene Brammer. Call to register beginning July 11. Finally, kids of all ages won’t want to miss the Summer Reading Finale with Jason the Juggler on July 24 at 1 p.m. Jason Huneke will defy the laws of gravity in this clean-cut comedy juggling show. Prize drawing and contest winners for the kids’ reading clubs will be announced on this day. No registration is necessary.

Programs for teens and tweens
Teens and tweens, make sure to save the date for Tuesdays this summer. Every Tuesday in July at 10:30 a.m. is Take-Apart Tuesday. Come to the library to take apart a variety of electronic devices to discover how they’re put together and how they work. Register one week prior to each program. Then at 4:30 p.m., Teen Tuesdays extend the fun with an exciting roster of summer shenanigans including Science of Harry Potter on July 8, a Zombie Party on July 15 and the Glow Grossology Party on Tuesday, July 25. Call the library at 515-278-5233 one week ahead of time to register for Teen Tuesdays.

Programs for adults
Adults, we didn’t forget about you. July kicks off with a Science of Homebrew class taught by the co-founder of Confluence Brewery on Tuesday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m. The fun continues on Saturday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. with a free Rock Your Crock cooking class chock full of unexpected and tasty recipes and techniques for the slow cooker. Finally, Whovians of all ages won’t want to miss the Doctor Who Party on July 19 at 3 p.m. Dress up as your favorite Doctor and come to the library for some time-traveling fun. Please register for all adult programs online at www.johnstonlibrary.com.
