New to Pleasant Hill, Matt Moehn has settled quickly into the area cycling scene.

“I used to do triathlons, but wanted to try bike racing,” says Moehn about his activities when living in Peoria, Illinois. “I did pretty well in my first few races, but then we moved to Des Moines for my new job.”

Moehn works as an engineer at Vermeer in Pella. His wife, Katie, is expecting their first child in December.

“When we moved here, I asked around and even Googled to find a racing bike club,” says Moehn. “I met with Jason (Simpson, the leader of the Sakari Race Team). He seemed cool, so I joined. It’s a great group of guys.”

For riding, Moehn keeps several bikes handy.

“I built a cyclocross bike from scratch,” he says. “I bought a frame from a guy I knew in Peoria before we moved here. I built it up with some stuff I had around. It’s pretty cool.”

What he built was a blue 2001 Trex XO1, aluminum.

“It was the first bike I ever built,” says Moehn. “It was fun to build. Now I like to ride it. I used it in my first cyclocross race last year, but I only raced one. We had to get settled in our new home in Pleasant Hill.”

Moehn raced his one time in Iowa City last November and plans on more this summer and fall.

“Our team is putting on a road race in August, by the Four Mile Elementary School,” he says. “It is a great course. I’m looking forward to helping put it on and even more forward to racing it.”

In that race, Moehn will choose another bike from his garage — a 2013 Giant TCR. His cyclocross bike is reserved for riding the gravel roads east of town.

“I love gravel riding,” he says. “I’d like to get some more gravel racing in next year.”

In the mean time, he’ll be hopping on one or the other for casual rides, training rides and races this summer.
