John McGovern, age 72, of 824 NW 20th Lane in Ankeny, and formerly of Boone, died June 19, 2014, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. He has been cremated.
A Memorial Service will be Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Boone. A committal service, with Military Honors, will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter at 2 p.m.
John Carrol McGovern was born in Oceanside, California, on July 31, 1941, the son of John Charles and Gertrude (Quinn) McGovern.
After graduating from high school, he attended the University of South Carolina.
On February 28, 2004, John married Janet (Shannon) Coleman in Boone. The couple moved to Ankeny from Boone last year.
John enlisted in the United States Army on his 17th birthday and served during the Vietnam War. He was a Special Forces Green Beret and Ranger serving in Vietnam with MACV-SOG, where he was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and a Meritorious Service Medal.
John served with the Army for over 20 years and was discharged on March 1, 1979, with the rank of Master Sergeant. Shortly before his death, his wife Janet was notified that John would be receiving the Silver Star.
In Boone, he later worked as an over the road truck driver, most recently for Madden Trucking.
John also drove a school bus for the Boone Community School district for seven years, retiring in 2013.
He enjoyed going to shooting ranges, traveling, listening to oldies and country music, and attending his yearly military reunions in Las Vegas. John also enjoyed reading military history, Facebook, and times with his family.
He was a member of the V.F.W #817, NRA, and the Special Forces Special Operations Association.
John is preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Eva Redman.
He is survived by his loving wife Janet of Ankeny; a son Alfred (Christina) McGovern of Columbia, South Carolina; four daughters, Sylvia (Darrell) Roland of Dover, Ohio, Layla Evans of New Iberia, Louisiana, Rachel McGovern and companion Rodney Davis of Cayce, South Carolina, and Kerrie Coleman Phipps of Boone; two brothers, Monte (Jackie) McGovern of Columbia, South Carolina, and John (Beverly) Stone of Sturgis, Kentucky; 13 grandchildren, five great grandchildren; mother-in-law and father-in-law JD and Alice Shannon of Boone; sisters-in-law, Jill (Fred) Willrick of Ankeny, Jean (Joe) Brooks and Julie (Tim) Dannan, all of Boone; brothers-in-law John (Linda) Shannon of Hartman, Arkansas, Jim (Sheri) Shannon of Shannon City, Iowa, and Jay (Peggy) Shannon of Oak Harbor, Washington, and his best friend Josie, his cat.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Tuesday from 2 until 8 p.m., where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. On Wednesday, friends may call at the Church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
