Born on January 10, 1919 on his family’s farm south of Coon Rapids, in Guthrie County, Iowa, he was the son of Walter and Pearl (Driggs) Patrick. He grew up on the farm and rode his pony to country school #9 as a boy and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1937. After high school he farmed with his father on the home farm and attended a trade school in Des Moines for aeronautic drafting. He was married to his high school sweetheart Linette Cretsinger on March 1, 1941. The couple made their home on Don’s family farm and later farmed with his father-in-law on the Cretsinger family farm while Linette taught country school. In 1957 they bought their own farm south of Coon Rapids where they raised their family. Don worked for Garst and Thomas Pioneer Seed Company for many years traveling to Missouri each year to oversee the spring planting and detasseling operation. He retired in 1981 and in 1988 Don and Linette built a home and moved into Coon Rapids. Don’s passions were his family and farming. He never grew tired of planting a seed and watching it grow. The last garden he planted was in the spring of 2013. However, his grandchildren were the joys of his life and what kept him young at heart. He loved to listen to Brianna play the piano and sing and watch Michael play sports. In later years, he just loved visiting with them and hearing about their lives. He also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, visiting with his friends and going to Chuck’s in the afternoons for a Mountain Dew. Don was a gentle soul who had a gift with animals as well as people. He took great pride in being a hard worker and faced life with an endless sense of humor.
Don is survived by his wife Linette of Coon Rapids and they were the oldest living married couple in the Coon Rapids area; a son Thomas Donald Patrick and his wife Georgia of Ft. Worth, Texas; a daughter Margie Schwenk and her husband Larry of Coon Rapids; two grandchildren: Brianna Schwenk-Maschman and her husband John of West Des Moines and Michael Patrick Schwenk of Coon Rapids; a sister-in-law Francis Davis of Fremont, Nebraska; a brother-in-law Frank Cretsinger of Coon Rapids and several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by two sons, Stephen and Michael, his parents and two brothers: Virgil and Viv.Information provided by: Johnson & Woodhouse Funeral Home
