Donald John Rockers, 87 of Perry, known to family and friends as “Rocky”, passed away from natural causes on June 7, 2014.  Don was born July 4, 1926 on the family farm in Anderson, County Kansas. Upon graduating from Richmond High School in Kansas in May, he immediately joined the Navy on June 6, 1944.  He served most of his Navy career aboard the USS Hancock CV-19 and saw action in the Pacific Theatre.  He was in Tokyo Bay in September 1945 when the formal surrender of the Japanese government was signed on board the battleship Missouri.  He was honorably discharged on July 1, 1947.

He graduated from Kansas State University in June 1951 and was employed by Cargill, Incorporated for nearly 40 years.   While serving as a branch accountant in Milbank, South Dakota, he met and then married Gwendolyn Jeanne Beck, on April 14, 1956 and was transferred to Minneapolis, Minnesota later that year, where they started their family.  Don managed a number of locations throughout the Midwest and they moved to Perry in 1978 as he was assigned to facilities in Bouton and Woodward, Iowa.  For years, Don was active in the community serving a variety of roles, including assisting at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Perry Country Club.  Don and Gwen cherished spending time with, and entertaining, family and friends.  They enjoyed 58 years of marriage together before Gwen was called home on May 2, 2014 – they were inseparable.

Don is survived by his three children, Lisa (Jeff) Hall of Waukee, Iowa, Chris (Lisa) Rockers of Denver, Colorado, and Jenny (Delbert) Lansing, of Perry, Iowa as well as six grandchildren; Rachael Hall, Christopher Rockers, Donny (Jeni) Lansing and Michael, Blake and Anna Lansing.  Don is also survived by his sisters Ethel Weber and Vera (Asa) Pysher of Denver, Colorado, brothers Larry Rockers, of Lawrence, Kansas and Ray (Janet) Rockers, of Paola, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m. at St Patrick Catholic Church in Perry on June 20,, 2014.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in their names.  Online condolences may be left at murdockfuneralhome.net.
