Esther L. Buterbaugh died on June 3, 2014. She was born April 23, 1918 to Clay and Violet Holtz Johnson, near Crofton, NE, the second of eight children. After graduating from Crofton High School, she furthered her education in a normal training program in Ogden, Iowa. She met Galen Buterbaugh while teaching in Boone County and they were married March 23, 1940. They started their married life farming on the family farm, north of Waukee, IA. Their three children, Gary, Linda and Deborah were raised here. In the 1970’s they built a new home in Dallas Center, IA and moved. There they raised beds of beautiful roses and maintained a yard of flowers and large vegetable garden. After Galen started losing his sight in 2003 they moved to Cedar Rapids, IA to be near their daughter, Linda and back to Dallas Center to Spurgeon Manor in 2006 when Galen’s health worsened.
Esther was an accomplished artist and expert seamstress and loved working in her flower beds. She was a former member of William Wagner Questers, Iowa Artists, Des Moines Rose Society and Dallas Center Women’s Club. She was a member of the Dallas Center Church of the Brethren, where Galen and she were active all of their married life.
Esther is survived by her children, Gary Buterbaugh, of Lakewood, Colorado, Linda Williams (Everett) of Swisher, Iowa and Deborah Buterbaugh (John Quarton) of Littleton, Colorado; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great grandchildren; seven step-great grandchildren; siblings, Michael Johnson, Reba Beasley and Joyce Weber and a sister-in-law, Velda Morris. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Galen and her siblings, Kenneth Johnson, Robert Johnson, Charlotte Hanten and Roberta Nickolas.
Memorials may be made to the family in care of Iles Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Visitation will be at Iles Brandt Chapel on Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 3-5 pm. Services will be held at the Dallas Center Church of the Brethren on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at the Brethren Cemetery, Dallas Center.
