This morning, June 4, the Johnston Police were called to Dewey Park, 5200 block NW 64th Place, after Parks Department employees discovered someone had set fire to the inside of the men’s restroom overnight.
According to the report, sometime during the overnight hours, someone entered the men’s restroom at the park and lit the toilet paper dispenser on fire causing a significant amount of char and smoke damage to the inside of the building. The Parks Department confirmed that last week two similar arson-related fires were discovered in the men’s restrooms at Lew Clarkson Park, 7300 block NW 54th Avenue.
Although the Johnston Police Department is working diligently to try and apprehend the responsible offenders, we need the community’s help to ensure our efforts are successful. The Johnston Police Department wants residents to be cognizant that this type of criminal activity is occurring and to contact the Police Department if you have any information about the described fires or if you observe any unusual or suspicious persons or behavior in or around any of the city’s parks.
Anyone having information regarding the described incidents is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Tyler Tompkins at 515-252-1367 or the Polk County Crime Stoppers at 515-223-1400.
