Fizz, Boom, Read! is the dynamic theme for the Clear Lake Public Library’s 2014 summer reading program for youth from infants through children entering fifth grade. The program will run from June 2 through July 19. Special programs to be offered throughout the summer will focus on making the world of science exciting and fun for kids:
The World’s Largest Chemistry Demo
Thursday, June 12, 4 p.m.
The Grout Museum is presenting this exciting program of amazing chemical reactions that earned the museum a spot in the Guinness Book of Records.
Dr. Magic Man (Mike Prestby)
Thursday, June 19, 4 p.m.
Magician and storyteller Mike Prestby and his puppet companion “Al Sir Chomps-a-Lot” will lead their audience on a hilarious, scientific and magical reading adventure.
Science Center of Iowa presents “BOOM”
Thursday, June 26, 4 p.m.
Find out the chemical reasons that things go pop or bang in this fast-paced, entertaining program.
Ben’s Bubble Show
Wednesday, July 16, 6:30 p.m.
Experience art, science and a touch of magic as Ben creates beautiful, humorous and mind boggling soap bubble sculptures.
Please call the library at 357-0315 to sign up for these special programs. In addition to these events children will also be able to keep reading logs throughout the period of the program to earn a variety of prizes and Book Bucks. The Book Bucks may be spent at the Scholastic Book Fair to be hosted by the library from July 21-31. Book Fair items may also be purchased with real money.
Spark a Reaction!
Middle schoolers will have their own program, “Spark a Reaction.” The summer program kick-off event for this age group will be a rocket launch with Clear Lake High School chemistry instructor Jeff Boyes on Tuesday, June 10, at 4 p.m. at the Clear Lake High School practice field. Other “Spark a Reaction” special events will include “Cooking Up Science” on Tuesday, June 24 and “A Mad Scientist Mystery Party” on Tuesday, July 15. This group can also win T-shirts and other prizes, and earn Book Bucks for the Book Fair by keeping a reading log over the summer.
Iowa Storytelling Festival
July 25 and 26
Professional storytellers Tim Tingle, Sara Slayton and Pat Coffie will be the featured performers at the library’s 26th Annual Iowa Storytelling Festival. A special treat for families will be “Stories for Kids of All Ages” at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, at the Story Tent in Clear Lake City Park. The Friends of the Library entirely fund the summer reading program and also provide support for the Iowa Storytelling Festival.
