Dr. John Barakat, 68, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2014. He was born in Rockford, IL on October 6, 1945 to John and Ruth (Abbas) Barakat. He graduated from Lincoln HS in 1963, where he was a star athlete and president of his class. He received his BA degree from Simpson College and went on to earn a Masters and Specialists degree in education from Drake University.
John was a teacher, coach, and Vice Principal for over 10 years and then went on to earn his doctorate degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic. He distinguished himself with several honors and positions through the ICS and with several advanced degrees in chiropractic, including a Diplomate in Orthopedics. He practiced in Urbandale for 33 years, the last 18 years with his daughter, Dr. Trisha Barakat. His interests included golf, Civil War and WWII history, reading, and spending time with his family and granddaughter, Alexa. He touched the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, and patients with his care and love.
He is survived by his wife Kathryn of 48 years, two daughters Shannan Barakat (Stacey Fletcher) and Trisha Barakat (Rob Christiansen) and his granddaughter. John is also survived by his father, John Barakat Sr. (Ramona), brothers, Doug Barakat (Mary) and Mark Barakat, sisters Lois Barakat Ichelson and Ella Barakat, and cousin MaryAnn Barakat. John was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth (Abbas) Barakat.
A Memorial service will be held at Iles Dunn’s Chapel at 2:00pm Saturday, May 31, 2014.
