Sylvia Burke

Sylvia Myers Burke, 85, passed from this life on Friday, May 16, 2014, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center. Per her wishes her body was donated to the University of Iowa for medical research in the hope that someday there will be a cure for Parkinson’s Disease. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Heartland Presbyterian Church, 142nd and Hickman in Clive, Iowa.

Sylvia was born on December 20, 1928, in Burlington, VT to George and Gladys (Cota) Myers. She lived in Burlington, VT until 1951; Wolcott, CT from 1951 to 1968 and Temple City, CA from 1968 to 2004. From 2004 to the present, she lived in Huxley, Johnston and Dallas Center, IA. Sylvia was employed with Accuwinder Engineering in California for 25 years before moving to Iowa.

Sylvia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She enjoyed keeping busy baking, cooking, crafting, making home improvements, gardening and abundantly feeding family and friends who frequently dropped by. Everything she did, she did well! She lovingly tolerated her daughters’ senses of humor inherited from their father.

Sylvia will be greatly missed by her daughters, Sandra (Joe) Ellis of Marion, IA, Shelley (Mac) Bernd of Arlington, TX, and Kathy (Mike) Bassett of Grimes, IA; five grandchildren, Kris (Guy) Worthington, Chris (Lorelle Lindo) Ellis, Kate Ellis, Paul (HeaYoung) Mahler and Thom (Kayla) Mahler; one great grandchild, Westley Lindo Ellis; and brothers Clayton (Carolyn) Myers of Spring Hill, FL, George (Flo) Myers of Burlington, VT and Ralph (Patsy) Myers of Geary, OK. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Edward Burke and her parents.

The family offers special thanks to the devoted staff of Spurgeon Manor for the loving care they provided. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions be made to Spurgeon Manor-Activities Dept. or the American Parkinson’s Disease Association – Iowa Chapter and mailed to any of Sylvia’s daughters. Online condolences are welcomed at IlesCares.com.
