James Edward Curvin, age 77, of Boone, passed away on May 13, 2014, at Westhaven Community.
Funeral services are Monday, May 19, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Open Bible with Rev. Bruce Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery.
James was born on March 2, 1937, in Boone, the son of Vernon F. Curvin and Evelyn (Engstrom) Curvin.
He grew up east of Boone in Jackson Township on the family farm, attending Jordan Consolidated School up until his graduation in 1951.
He joined the Iowa Air National Guard in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1961.
In 1958, James married Evanne Jennings. They divorced 19 years later.
As a young man, James worked for Firestone in Des Moines and from there went to work for Percival’s Manufacturing in Boone, starting in the sheet metal department. James progressed to the managing position at the plant, which enabled him to travel across the United States and to work with other companies overseas until his retirement in 1989.
In his younger years, he was a member of the Sportsman’s Club, coached Little League, and was active in Indian guides with his sons.
He enjoyed spending time with his family having cookouts and watching birds, playing cards, participating in the stock market, hunting, golfing, watching sporting events, and taking his father and grandson fishing every summer at Black Hawk Lake.
James also enjoyed traveling with his cousin Bev and her husband Roland as well as visiting his son and grandchildren in Detroit.
James also loved sitting outside with his daughter-in-law to feed peanuts to their pet squirrel, Matilda.
He will be missed as a father, father-in-law, brother, and most of all a great grandpa.
James Edward Curvin had a heart of gold in many ways.
James is preceded in death by his parents Vernon F. Curvin and Evelyn (Engstrom) Curvin.
He is survived by son Steve E. Curvin and wife Donna of Boone and a son Michael J. Curvin and wife Elaine of Redford, Michigan; grandsons Steven E. Curvin Jr. and wife Kelly of Boone, and Michael J. Curvin II and wife Mandy of North Carolina; a granddaughter Jamy Rentschler of Ames; great grandchildren Abra, Olivia, Brady, Eric, Sarah, David, Michael James III,and Ryan Curvin. Also surviving are his sister Jean Peterson and husband Gordon of Boone, and nephew, Brad Peterson, and wife Amy with their two sons Tim and Tyler Peterson of Ankeny. Jim is also survived by other family members and friends.
Friends may call on Sunday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall from 2 to 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Visitation continues on Monday at the Church from 9:30 a.m. to service time.
