Ryan and Ali Kauffman, along with their two children —  Noah, 4 and Berkley, 18 months — live just blocks from a new elementary school, Cascade Falls Aquatic Center and Dean Park. They’re expecting baby No. 3 in October, and Ali says she’s looking forward to walking the kids to school one day. With five bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, they have room to grow.

The Kauffmans worked closely with their builder, Character Homes by JCorp, to bring their dreams to life, including positioning their home so the main living area fills with southern light.

“The house is a story-and-a-half layout, so the big, vaulted ceilings in the main living and a loft area that overlooks the dining/great room keeps everything very open,” Ali says. “We have great spaces for entertaining, and a great deck for outdoor living and gathering as well.”

The three bedrooms upstairs are designed to grow with the kids. The furniture was hand-built by Ryan, using cherry and walnut.

“We tried to be very conscious on styles that we would hopefully love for a long time,” Ali says. “Each of the bedrooms has unique coves and built-ins that make for extra storage as well as fun areas for the kids to play.”

They moved into their new home in June 2013 from Urbandale “for a variety of reasons,” Ali says.

“One was to be closer to Ryan’s work, based in Huxley. Secondly, we had loved Prairie Trail since the beginning; we love the sense of community that we felt here and the fact that it is a great area to raise a family.”

With 13 miles of trails and 200 acres of parks planned, Prairie Trail is one of the fastest-growing communities in Ankeny. Located just north of Oralabor Road and west of Des Moines Area Community College, more than 200 homes have been built in this area. In 2011, Prairie Trail was named Top Residential Neighborhood by DSM Magazine.
