URBANDALE, Iowa – May 5, 2014 – On April 30, 2014, the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce awarded Marc Hermon, Urbandale High School Advanced Chemistry and Physics Instructor, the distinguished honor of Educator of the Year. Nominations were received from educators and administrators throughout the Urbandale area.
Hermon has been at the forefront of transforming education throughout the Urbandale Community School District in order to make it more relevant, purposeful and inspiring for students. His classroom is focused on meaningful learning, rather than simply achieving a grade, as he provides differentiated learning experiences for his students that serve to better support their strengths and abilities. Hermon incorporates formative assessment feedback which provides valuable feedback to students in order for them to gain a greater understanding of the material, to know what they did well and to know what needs improvement as they strive to achieve mastery. This type of learning system is proving effective as more students are engaged in their learning and motivated to set and reach high achievement goals.
“Marc is an outstanding teacher and educator, whose leadership has supported the implementation of Moodle as a platform for digital teaching and learning across the entire district,” said Dr. Doug Stilwell, Superintendent, Urbandale Community School District. “His focus on being student-centered and his use of quality tools and processes provides his students with the highest quality of learning opportunities.”
Hermon has been at Urbandale High School since 1999 and is both an active leader and contributor throughout the district. In addition to teaching Advanced Chemistry and Physics, which are dual-credit courses offered through DMACC, he coaches the UHS Physics Olympics Team and the UHS Science Bowl Team—both of which have won State Championships under his guidance. Hermon founded the Annual Roller Coaster Engineering Competition which is held every spring at Iowa State University. He is a member of the UHS Technology Steering Committee and maintains the ULearn.UrbandaleSchools.com online courseware tool, sponsored by Moodle, and used by educators throughout the district. The Urbandale Community School District congratulates Hermon on receiving this much-deserved honor and recognition.
