100 years ago: “Dr. Clinton E. Mershon reports the arrival of a fine 9 lb. girl Saturday at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Martin Dymond.”

75 years ago: “Bill Macy Makes Big Ten Swimming Team: William Macy of Adel, Ia. was one of the thirty-three University of Chicago athletes who last Friday received major “C’s” for their participation in six winter quarter sports. Macy, an undergraduate in the Physical Science Division, received his award in swimming and as a member of the big 10 championship water polo team.”

50 years ago: “Caption: Some of the group of youngsters who braved Saturdays windy weather to the big “Easter Hunt” are pictured above. It was estimated that about 400 took part in the hunt which was postponed from Easter Week-end due to the heavy snow. A total of 3,300 eggs were hidden by the Adel Boy Scouts and the youngsters collected over $285.00 in quarters and silver dollars from Adel Business people.”

25 years ago: “Naomi Maahs of Adel this week received the alumni award of merit from the Iowa State Sigma Delta Honor Society of agriculture. She was one of three individuals to receive the award at the society’s banquet at Iowa State University in Ames on April 17. She was nominated for the award by the faculty of the horticulture department of the College of Agriculture.”

Some interesting facts about Adel
The first mail carriers in Adel were Fred Woods and Vernon McCleary hired on May 1, 1930. They were hired, and then the post office found it was necessary to take a Civil Service test before employment.
