Raymond Martin, age 83, of 1126-198th Road, died March 18, 2014, at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall. Following the service, he will be cremated.
Raymond Lee Martin was born in Boone on April 30, 1930, the son of Charles and Etta (Elsberry) Martin.
He served with the United States Army during the Korean War.
On December 26, 1952, Ray married Dorothy Crook in Boone. The couple later divorced.
Ray was a licensed journeyman sheet metal man. For many years, he was employed with Pritchard Bros. Plumbing and Heating and later worked for Duncan Heating and Plumbing.
Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, especially deep fried chicken and fish for his annual fish fry, and vegetable gardening.
For several years, he ran the farmer’s market in Boone. He and his brother Dick sold their produce at the farmer’s markets in Boone and Ames.
In earlier years, Ray enjoyed trapping muskrat, beaver, and mink, and he also coached youth and Babe Ruth baseball.
He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed watching sports on television.
Ray had a soft spot for animals and he cared for many stray cats.
He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter Marlana Sargent, two brothers Gerald and Albert Martin, and a sister Lorena ‘Maxine’ Duncan.
He is survived by a son Denny (Deanna) Martin of Boone; two daughters Debi (Jim) Dawson of Johnston and Pam (Eric) Sargent of Boone; three brothers Richard (Betty) Martin, Wallace Martin, and Bill (Gerrie) Martin, all of Boone; three sisters Alice (Jim) Whittlesey of Boone, Hazel (Kenny) Peterson of Ogden, and Diane Riffle of Lansing, Michigan; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Friday from 2 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday from 8 a.m. until service time.
