When I think of the month of March, I think of spring… which makes me think of the color green… which makes me think of St. Patrick’s Day…. which then makes me think about being lucky. I think all of us here in Winterset are lucky — and here is why I believe it to be so:
Broadway is currently promoting our community to theater-goers and musical-lovers via “The Bridges of Madison County Musical” now playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York City. No, it’s not the specific intent of the directors and producers of the musical, yet it’s happening. You can’t buy the kind of publicity our little community is currently receiving through photos and news stories in every media form, plus mentions in thousands of Broadway playbills. Check the musical’s website at http://bridgesofmadisoncountymusical.com/ and see Madison County listed as a “partner” along with American Airlines, Talbots and many other nationally-recognized brands.
If you have guests coming to town and want to show them a great time, look no further than your own backyard. You don’t have to drive to Des Moines for great shopping, restaurants, entertainment or outdoor activities. Family members from the Kansas City area visited us last year, and our family had a ball showing off our beautiful community all weekend. We shopped all the stores on the square, hiked to Clark Tower, visited the Winterset Farmers Market, ate all of our meals at restaurants in town, then spent the entire next day exploring and picnicking at Pammel State Park.
We have county and city leaders who work ceaselessly to plan for our future and ensure that our standard of living and way of life remain bright. They form relationships and ask tough questions of legislators at both at the state and federal level in order that Winterset’s needs are met and that we remain at the top of the list of projects.
Our community is a photographer’s paradise. From the breathtaking scenic vistas along county highways, to our beautifully restored courthouse, flower-lined downtown streets and world-famous covered bridges, the inspirations for photographs are endless.
We dream big and make things happen around here. Do Hollywood icons like Maureen O’Hara visit towns of our size on a routine basis as the headline for a fundraiser? Big kudos to the John Wayne Birthplace and its hard-working board of directors for accomplishing such a feat last year as plans continue to realize the dream of constructing the world’s only museum dedicated to honoring the life and work of John Wayne, right here in Winterset.
There is always an event happening to participate in and enjoy. From fundraising pancake breakfasts and events to classes and programs at our public library and live music at area wineries, there is always something going on that’s fun and family-friendly to do.
How truly lucky we are to be able to call Winterset “home.”
