Cinema Mania at Johnston Public Library

Posted March 19, 2014 in Community Blogs, Johnston

filmbookLove the movies? We do too. March is a great month for cinemaphiles and the Johnston Public Library has everything you need for a film festival in your very own living room. Read on for more silver screen fun.

Oscar Nominated Movies. Want to watch all of the Best Picture nominees from this year’s Academy Awards? We have them. Go to our online catalog at www.johnstonlibrary.com to browse a list of Oscar nominated films and check availability.

Read the book. Watch the movie. Get ahead of the curve and read the book before the movie hits the big screen. Buzzfeed.com has released a list of popular books being made into movies in 2014 including Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, The Giver by Lois Lowry and A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. Here at JPL, we are excited about the movie adaptation of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn that is set to be released in October starring Ben Affleck and Rosemund Pike. Two wildly popular young adult titles, Divergent by Veronica Roth and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green will also be debuting on the silver screen this year. Divergent has the potential to be the next big dystopian teen popcorn flick, while Green’s novel tells the story of two teenagers with cancer who meet in a support group. It’s sure to be a heartwrencher that will please teens and adults alike.  We’re also counting down the minutes for the wildly popular coming of age, coming to terms memoir by Cheryl Strayed, Wild, which will star Reese Witherspoon. Stop in to the library to grab all the books on the Buzzfeed list.

We have a diverse selection of DVDs and Blu-rays available for checkout for free at Johnston Public Library, but if you need a change of scenery, bring the entire household to our free Family Movie Matinee on the last Sunday of every month at 2:00pm. This month’s movie on Sunday, March 30th is a fun-filled animated movie featuring two turkeys who travel back in time to get turkey off the holiday menu. The family movie is free and open to all; movie snacks will be provided.
