Bruce Boyle

Bruce James Boyle passed away Monday, March 17, 2014, after a brief illness. He was 82 years old. He is survived by a sister, three daughters, eight grandchildren and many rich memories from a life well-lived.

Born in Minneapolis, MN, he grew up in many towns around the Midwest, including Kankakee, IL, Appleton, WI, and Hannibal, MO. He served two years in the Navy and was graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a journalism degree and curiosity about the world, which he passed along to his daughters. He worked for more than 30 years at Meredith Corporation, rising from an advertising salesman in Chicago to become an award-winning publisher of Successful Farming Magazine, president of the National Agri-Marketing Association, and later head of Meredith Video Publishing.

After marrying Betty Jean Tucker in 1960, they settled in Des Moines and created a strong family and close-knit group of friends. Bruce was known for his love of jazz, his poetry written on shirt cardboard for special occasions, and his travel tips for friends. He enjoyed hosting parties and serving delicious, unhealthy food like steak and fettuccini alfredo. He enjoyed spending summers at Lake Okoboji, where he became famous for boating mishaps. After retiring, he bought a home in Rio Verde, AZ and continued to make new friends, play golf, have dinner parties and travel to see new sights until his beloved Betty Jean passed away in 2007.

He thrived on spending time with his children, Katie Sobolik of Sleepy Hollow, NY, Julie Doyle of Evanston, IL, and Amy Colton of Evanston, IL and all of their children. He visited them frequently for sporting events, musicals, dance recitals and special family summer vacations. He remained very close to his sister, Mary Goonrey of Harrisburg, PA.

He spent his last years at Deerfield, where he enjoyed time with friends and was well cared for by the compassionate staff.

A celebration of Bruce Boyle’s life will be planned for later this spring. Donations in his honor can be sent to Youth Homes of Mid-America. Box 39, Johnston, IA 50131.
