Naomi Jean Varce, 87, a resident of Calvin Community for five years, passed from this life on Sunday, March 16, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Dumont Cemetery, in Dumont, Iowa.
Naomi was born on August 12, 1926, in Ventura, Iowa, to Rev. G. H. and Clara (Brown) Varce. She graduated from high school in Collins, Iowa and lived in several towns in Iowa before moving to Kansas City, Missouri. Naomi was employed in the court system in downtown Kansas City. She was a musician, playing the piano and marimba for the Salvation Army Church in Kansas City. Naomi later played the piano and organ in the church she attended in North Kansas City. She moved to the Des Moines area with her sister, Marjorie, more than ten years ago.
She is survived by two sisters, Pauline Varce of Des Moines and Marjorie Varce of Urbandale; two brothers, Rev. Harold (Virginia) Varce of Windsor Heights, Iowa and Rev. Donald (Irene) Varce of Happy Valley, Oregon; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Varce of Cherokee, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Naomi was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Artheda Hunter; and one brother, Rev. Paul Varce.
The family is grateful to the Calvin Community care givers and to Hospice of Central Iowa for their loving care of Naomi.
