More is better

More.

That’s a great word to describe Zebb’s Burgers and More, which opened recently in a familiar location on Fifth Avenue South.

Formerly the Fort Dodge Maid Rite, Zebb’s gives the restaurant more freedom to offer local favorites and new menu choices frequently.

Loose meat sandwiches remain a favorite at Zebb’s, and I was really tempted to check out the Zebb’s version of this traditional favorite. But on this particular cold and windy Saturday, I wanted something a little more hearty.

And when it comes to a hearty sandwich, guaranteed to satisfy, it’s hard to beat an Iowa breaded tenderloin. Real pork, breaded to perfection and fried to a crispy and delicious tenderness, is a sure crowd pleaser at Zebb’s. Topped with chopped onions and pickle, along with ketchup and mustard, it was a practically a meal in itself. But, since french fries are a rare treat for me, I decided to go with the full basket meal and enjoy a heaping helping of the fries.

Now, I must say that I normally prefer thick-cut fries, but these thin and crisp marvels truly hit the spot and were a great accompaniment to my sandwich. Somehow I resisted the urge to top it all off with a malt, but we all know how great the malts are here already anyway.

My dining companion filled up on the hot beef dinner, a winter favorite that’s a working man’s meal any time of year. Served on a ciabata bun, generous portions of sliced roast beef are paired with mashed potatoes and then covered all over with a rich, real gravy.

Perhaps the most exciting part about the change to Zebb’s is that the menu continues to change and evolve. There are wraps with mixed greens, tomatoes and just about any vegetable you can imagine. There are fresh soups every day and all the old favorites. There’s even a seafood basket, just to keep things interesting.

Loose meat has long been an Iowa favorite, but at Zebb’s it’s refreshing to see the changes and enjoy even more delicious favorites. More is a good thing.
