Q: Does chiropractic care help with asthma?

Posted March 05, 2014 in Advice Column, Ames

A: As we are entering into spring (hopefully), many adults and children alike will be eager to get outside and be active. With spring comes warmer weather, more color and, unfortunately, more allergy and asthma problems for people. Of the 20 million Americans with asthma, 9 million of them are children.  Since the 1980s, the incidence of asthma has increased by 60 percent in children.

We are asked often if chiropractic care can help with asthma? I would love to yell out at the top of my lungs “YES!”  However, that is not exactly accurate. As chiropractors, our primary goal is to locate and correct misalignments or subluxations in your body that can directly affect your body’s ability to function properly. If the asthma is caused by your nervous system not functioning properly then yes, there is research that explains the benefits of chiropractic care for asthma. In fact, a clinical trial showed that asthma patients under chiropractic care experienced significant improvement of bronchial hyper-reactivity and saw a decrease in asthma severity.

Doctors of chiropractic offer a thorough evaluation of asthma patients, examining their overall physical and neurological data, as well as their diet, lifestyle and potential stressors.  In this way, chiropractic care can offer invaluable support.
