Sharon Mackey is one of the third grade teachers at North Ridge Elementary School in Grimes. This is her first year at North Ridge. She previously taught first grade at South Prairie Elementary School.
“Now I’m seeing some siblings of the students I had previously,” she says. She has been with the Dallas Center School District for 12.5 years. “I really love the kids and enjoy when I see them understanding what I’m teaching, and see them discovering new things.”
Mackey graduated from Story City High School and went on to earn her degree in elementary education with an endorsement in early childhood education and another in coaching from Iowa State University. She has coached and played basketball, soccer and softball in high school. She has earned her master’s degree in education from Viterbo College.
“I love being active, exercising, going to sporting events,” she says.
Reading and math are Mackey’s favorite subjects to teach.
“I love listening to the students reading aloud and working with strategies,” she says. “I love reading myself and want to instill that love in my students, too.”
Mackey says she likes the progression of math; once a skill is learned the kids can go on to learn other skills.
“I have no favorite part of a day,” Mackey says. “I like that the days go pretty fast. and we keep pretty busy.”
When Mackey has free time, she enjoys spending it with family. She has a daughter in college and a son who lives in Colorado.
“I enjoy traveling,” she says. “We were fortunate to travel to Portugal during the year my son studied there.”
Mackey is enjoying her time at DC-G.
“Even though I don’t live in Grimes, I feel as though I have gotten acquainted in the community,” she says. “I feel that I know quite a few of the families. The staff at DC-G is great, and it is good working with them.”
