Joyce Frevert

Muriel Joyce Frevert, age 83, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2014 at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa. Joyce was born on March 19, 1930 to Ingval and Hilda (Lund) Espeland in their family home in Campbell County north of Glenham, SD. Joyce was baptized and confirmed at Norway Lutheran Church, Glenham, SD. She attended one year of high school in Glenham, SD and then transferred to Augustana Academy in Canton, SD to obtain the required classes for nursing school.

Joyce started nursing training at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, MN following her graduation from Augustana Academy in 1948. Joyce successfully graduated from nursing school in 1952. She was employed as a registered nurse at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, Iowa, and Audubon Memorial Hospital in Audubon, IA. Joyce retired after working at Hospice of Central IA in West Des Moines, IA. Joyce was very proud of her career as a registred nurse and her past co-workers have many fond memories. She shared her love of nursing by teaching first aid and helping to implement the prenatal program in Audubon. She truly found that her time as a Hospice nurse was the most satisfying.

Joyce married her loving husband of 57 years, Willis Donald (Don) Frevert, at Norway Lutheran Church in Glenham, SD on November 5th, 1955. Don and Joyce began raising their family in Charles City, IA. In 1959, they moved their young family to Audubon, Iowa where they raised their four children, Diane, Chuck, Karen and Nancy. After living in Audubon for 21 years, Joyce and Don moved to Urbandale, IA where they lived for 33 years.

Joyce was active in many community activities in Audubon and Des Moines. In Audubon she was a member of Our Saviours Lutheren Church, Garden Club and a Den mother for Scouts. She also enjoyed co-directing a play for Country Players. In Des Moines she was in the Urbandale Lioness Club, PEO Chapter Q, and Daughters of Norway. Don and Joyce were charter members of Faith Luthern Church in Clive, IA. Joyce loved to quilt and was a member of the Rather Bee Quilters of Des Moines, IA. She will be remembered daily by her family through the many beautiful quilts she made for them.

Joyce was preceded in death by her loving husband, Willis Donald Frevert; her parents; her sister, Gladys and husband Palmer Anderson, her sister Ellen and husband Fred Wessel, her sister Dorothy Espeland; her brother Earl and wife Violet Espeland; and two grandchildren, William and Katherine Nelsen. She is survived by her three daughters, Diane Frevert of Rockford, IL, Karen (Randy) Nelsen, of Audubon, IA and Nancy (David) Solohub of Minnetonka, MN; her son, Charles (Regina) Frevert of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Heather (Jon Fox), Clinton, Miranda and Elizabeth Nelsen and Katherine Solohub; her brother, Marvin (Bev) Espeland of Rapid City, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

A Remembrance Gathering will be held at Taylor Hill Lodge in Audubon, IA on Sunday evening from 6-8pm; with a prayer service at 7pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, February 24 at 11:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church, in Clive, Iowa followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Friendship Home Memory Unit Campaign in Audubon, IA, Faith Lutheran Church in Clive, IA or Hospice.
