Marilyn McCulley, age 80 of Centerville, Iowa departed this life on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Centerville Nursing and Rehab Center surrounded by the love and prayers of family and friends.
Marilyn was born August 6, 1933 in Taylorville, IL to Rev. Ray Carrothers and Veda Ellis Carrothers. Marilyn graduated from Pittsfield High School and attended Western Illinois in Macomb, IL. for two years. She married Lowell McCulley June 5, 1953 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage last June in the company of all family members and many friends at a reception in Centerville. Marilyn and Lowell resided in Jacksonville, IL, Houston Texas, and in 2006, moved to Centerville to be close to daughter Mary Beth and her family. Marilyn worked for Central National Insurance Company in Jacksonville and Leachman Cardiology Associates at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
Marilyn was a member of First United Methodist Church in Centerville, and Mary Circle at the Church. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Over the years Marilyn enjoyed crewel embroidery, counted cross stitch, ceramics, folk art pottery and scrap-booking. She made “rag” quilts for all four grandchildren when they went away to college. Her recent hobbies were genealogy and reading. She was interested in history and loved to travel. She traveled with Lowell to Hawaii, Alaska and to many International Barbershop Society contests throughout US and Canada. With the Barbershop Society, they traveled to England, France, Belgium, Germany, and Scotland.
She is survived by her husband Lowell, two daughters Rhea (Stan) Fernandes of Tempe, AZ and Mary Beth McCulley of Centerville; Dr. Tom (Dr. Tamara) Fernandes of Denver, CO, Maris Fernandes of Tampa, FL, Staci (Jeremy) Veach of Centerville, Iowa, A.J. (Sonja) Hook of Knoxville, Iowa and also three great grandchildren, Kole Hook, Sean Fernandes and Cora Veach. Also surviving are her sister-in-law Edna McCulley of Oswego, KS, and cousin Mable (Irv) Sutton of Pueblo, CO.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM Wednesday morning, February 19, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Centerville with Reverends Dennis Gilbert and Kevin Carrothers officiating. Friends may call Tuesday from 11AM-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at the Lange Funeral Home & Crematory, Centerville. Burial will take place Thursday at 1:30 PM February 20, 2014 at the Blue River Cemetery, Detroit, Illinois with Rev. Kevin Carrothers officiating. A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church and may be left at the Lange Funeral Home & Crematory.
