Harlan James Hengstenberg, age 79, of Centerville, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the Continental Care Center in Seymour, Iowa. He was born the son of August G. and Florence S. (Jenkins) Hengstenberg on April 24, 1934 in Owensville, Missouri. He graduated from the Owensville High School. He served his country in the US Army from December of 1956 until his honorable discharge in December of 1958.
On June 2, 1956, Harlan was united in marriage to Judith Dooley in Centerville, Iowa. Harlan worked for the CRI & P Railroad for a time before he started his farming career. He was a purebred cattleman for the Red Angus and Santa Gertrudis breeds. He also enjoyed being a Feed Salesman for many years. He was a member of the Red Angus Association and the Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and showed his cattle all over the country. He served many years on the Appanoose County Fair Board and was a member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association. He enjoyed being involved in the agriculture community across the state of Iowa. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville where he taught Sunday school for a time. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Kaaba Shrine.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; a brother, Harold Hengstenberg; and a sister, Juanita Faulkner.
Harlan is survived by: his wife, Judith Hengstenberg of Centerville, Iowa; sons, Mark Hengstenberg and his wife, Margaret of Eagle, Wisconsin, Craig Hengstenberg of Brookfield, Missouri and Eric Hengstenberg and his wife, Tonia of Exline, Iowa; a daughter, Jennifer Hengstenberg and her husband, Karl Greene of Kuwait; eight grandchildren; Nicole Smith, Chad Hengstenberg, Heather Hengstenberg, Joshua Hengstenberg, Rebecca Hengstenberg, Haley Hengstenberg, Jacob Hengstenberg, and Abigail Hengstenberg; and eight great grandchildren; also a nephew, Hal Hengstenberg of Bland, Missouri.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 2 pm until 8 pm with the family present from 6 pm until 8 pm at the funeral home.
Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and left or mailed to the funeral home.
