Dads and daughters can spend some special time together during Evangelical Free Church’s annual Father/Daughter Hoedown.

Ames resident Craig Hinson is lucky enough to have three dates to the dance every year…the Father/Daughter Hoedown, that is.

Hinson and his three daughters — Annika, 7; Kiersten, 5; and Britta, 2; attend the Father/Daughter Hoedown hosted by the First Evangelical Free Church of Ames every winter and are looking forward to this year’s Western theme.

“My daughters look forward to it all year, and once it’s over, they start asking when it’s going to happen again,” Hinson says. “A daddy-and-daughters date with no other agenda but to have a great time with other fathers and their daughters.”

Fathers and daughters are invited to attend the sixth annual dance on Sunday, Feb. 23, from 6-8 p.m. The Father Daughter Hoedown will take place at The Plex on 5501 George Washington Carver Ave., across from the Ames Country Club.

Anna McConnell, co-chair of this year’s dance, says the event started as a simple way to encourage a healthy relationship between a father and his daughter or daughters.

“It is a special night where a father can develop his bond with her as well as helping her see the way she should be treated and respected by men,” McConnell says. “An important factor in a young girl’s self-esteem is her relationship with her father, and this event gives an opportunity for fathers and daughters to connect one on one.”

Hinson says he enjoys this daddy-daughter date, and he looks forward to going with his girls as they get older.

“It’s tough in our day-to-day activities to find quality time to spend with each other,” Hinson says. “There is work, school, soccer and the list goes on. Spending time one on one, let alone time with all of my daughters at the same time is so hard, and this event allows us just that.”

“It’s also a special event where they can build lasting memories,” McConnell says. “Guests can arrive and get a photo together, have some snacks, do a little dancing and hear a brief spiritual message.”

Register online for the Father Daughter Hoedown at, or register in the lobby of First Evangelical Free Church on Sundays following church services. Early registration is encouraged, but guests can also pay at the door. The cost is $5 per person and includes a live DJ, free professional
photograph, snacks and a party favor.
