Katherine McDonnell

Katherine L. McDonnell, 102, passed away January 29, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 5, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Des Moines with burial at Glendale Cemetery. A rosary will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2014. Family will receive friends following the rosary until 7 p.m. at Iles Dunn’s Chapel.

Katherine was the daughter of Ellen (Berry) and Daniel Ryan and wife of the late Paul C. McDonnell. She was preceded in death, 30 years to the day, by her loving husband, Paul. Also preceding her in death are her parents and sisters, Edna and Grace. Other than the war years, when she accompanied her husband to several Midwest cities and Washington D.C., she has resided her entire life in Des Moines.

She is survived by her three children, Mary Ellen (Edward) Schmitt of Portland, OR, Charles (Glenda) McDonnell of Rochester, MN, and Kathleen McDonnell of Des Moines, IA. She has six grandchildren: Laura Jordan, Tedd and Jennifer Schmitt, Ryan, Craig and Kevin McDonnell and five great-grandchildren: Noah, Henry and William Jordan, Miranda and Kellyn McDonnell.

She enjoyed keeping up on current events and political happenings, and especially liked cooking and following Iowa sports teams. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.

She was a graduate of St. Joseph Academy and Capital City Commercial College and worked for several State of Iowa departmental agencies before her marriage in 1943. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, study club groups and was involved with the St. Anthony School’s PTA. In addition, she was a member of the South Des Moines Garden Club. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Katherine was a devout and gracious lady, a joy to all who had the good fortune to know her.
