Caneel Gaffney

Suddenly and with deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Caneel E. Gaffney on January 31, 2014 at her home in West Des Moines, IA. Caneel, from a young age dealt with many medical issues related to a brain tumor diagnosed in 2003. Through this experience she drew strength and developed tremendous faith in God.

Caneel was born on October 29, 1989 in Des Moines to Terri and Todd Gaffney. She graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 2008 and went on to fulfill her dream of being a nurse after attending St. Ambrose and Kaplan University. After her graduation from Kaplan, Caneel worked at Trinity Center in Des Moines and was currently employed at Carlisle Care Center in Carlisle, IA.

The one thing that always remained a constant in Caneel’s life was her selflessness and compassion for others. She was a loving daughter with a heart of gold. Her smile was always sure to light up the room.

Caneel was also always very artistic, she enjoyed painting rocks in Storm Lake as a child, taking pottery classes and making custom cards and scrapbooks for friends and loved ones. In recent years she took up hobbies such as rock climbing, teaching herself how to play guitar and learning new languages.

Caneel is survived by her father and step mother, Todd and Debi Gaffney of Waukee, IA; her mother and step father, Terri and Tim Cullen of Anthem, AZ; brother, Todd of Chicago, IL; grandmothers, Phyllis Gaffney and Joann Larson; many aunts, uncles and cousins; godparents, Fred and Mary Campobasso of Chicago; and the family dog, Summit. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Dick Gaffney and Chet Brecher.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, West Des Moines. Visitation at Iles Dunn’s Chapel will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 5 including a 6:45 p.m. vigil service.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Ronald McDonald House, 1441 Pleasant St., Des Moines.

Her family wishes to express gratitude to those who have known, cared and prayed for Caneel during her lifetime.
