Jerrod Dale Nuss was born on September 15, 1982 in Hays, KS. Jerrod lived with his family in Russell, KS until 1990 when the family moved to Topeka, KS where he spent the majority of his childhood and school years. He moved to Corydon, Iowa in 2000 and graduated from Wayne County High School in 2001, attended Indian Hills Community College and Drake University and resided in Des Moines, Iowa until his untimely death on January 25, 2014.

Jerrod Dale Nuss was not an ordinary individual! He marched to the beat of his own drum, to say the least. He was a free-thinker that never made a judgment on anyone, and that is why he was so loved by family and friends. Jerrod was a self-taught musician and artist. At a very young age he had a beautiful voice that was unmatchable. In recent years he continued his musical talent by playing hand drums and other instruments with his friends; he could listen to music for hours upon hours and never get bored! He also enjoyed going to festivals, playing video games, Frisbee golf, skateboarding, and getting to family functions to enjoy time with his loved ones and to eat great food!

At 31 years old, he was enjoying what life had in store for him and was happier than he’d ever been. Having recently discovered that he was going to be a daddy, he was overjoyed at the prospect of naming his baby boy “Jerrod.” Going forward, his friends and family can rest assured that Jerrod will be kept alive through his son (to be born in April), family and wonderful friends.

Jerrod will be watching over many that will miss him including, Addie Sackman, girlfriend and mother of his unborn child (Jerrod Jameson); sister, Erica Nuss of Norwalk, IA; father, Melbirn Nuss of Russell, KS; mother and step-father, Joyce and Stuart McDanel of Moravia, IA; paternal grandmother, Lola Nuss of Russell, KS; maternal grandmother, Bertha Johnson of Topeka, KS; step grandmother, Bonnie McDanel of Moravia, IA; step brothers, Chad and Shawn McDanel of Coralville, IA and his best friend, Jordan Hulse of Des Moines. In addition, aunts, uncles, and cousins include: Jeff and Joleen Nuss of Topeka, KS with children Zachary, Alex, and Marissa; Rola and Dave Funk of Russell, KS with child Taylor; Jolene Nuss of Wilson, KS with children Steven and Jerome; Lori Hurst of Russell, KS with children Caitlin and Austin, Jason and Crystal Nuss of Council Bluffs, IA with children Kara and Ellen; Kathy Torr of Topeka, KS with child Christine; John Winkel of Glen Elder, KS with children LeeRoy, Loretta, Samantha, Jessica, and Anita; and Joe and Marcia Winkel with children Alicia, Raquelle, Corey, and Kimberly. Needless to say, he will be a busy guardian angel!

Jerrod was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Dale William Winkel and Melvin Nuss.

We love him immensely and will always remember what he brought to our life each and every day. Cheers to a son, brother, friend, grandson, cousin, and ‘soon to be dad’ that will never be forgotten.

A memorial has been established at The United Service Credit Union for Jerrod and will be used to start an education fund for Jerrod’s unborn son, Jerrod Jameson. Memorials and condolences may be sent to the family in care of Dunn’s Funeral Home, 2121 Grand, Des Moines, IA 50312.
