AMES, Iowa — The Workspace at the Iowa State Memorial Union has classes and events beginning the first half of February including a number of Valentine themed programs.
Argentine Tango Practica – Valerie Williams
This Milonga (dance party) is a multi-level class with lots of time to enjoy the music and dance. From 4 – 5pm moves for beginners are introduced with a different figure each week along with techniques for dancing better. From 5 – 7pm the dance floor is yours for dancing under the guidance of Valerie and working with different partners. An intermediate level figure will also be introduced during this time. Purchase a dance punch card for use in Valerie’s Tango classes. Wear dancing shoes, smooth-soled shoes, or socks.
Classes meet every Sunday. Purchase a dance punch card and attend as often as your schedule allows.

February Craft of the Month: Hometown Love String Art
Hammer nails into a painted board in the shape of your state, pinpoint your hometown and add a string pattern. Lots of ways to personalize for someone special before Valentine’s Day or for any special occasion.

Tai Chi – Jon Lloyd
Learn the Yang Style Short Form as developed by Cheng Man-ch’ing. The fun, easy-to-learn movements of The Form refresh the spirit and help improve balance, posture, flexibility, confidence, circulation, and overall health and well-being. Students will also learn a few Qugong health exercises. Classes are appropriate for college students to seniors and everyone in between. Lloyd has been studying and practicing Yang Style Tai Chi for more than 20 years.

Swing Dance – Sarah Carney
This class will lead you through basic swing dancing so that you’ll feel comfortable on the social dance floor and dancing to a variety of swing music. We’ll touch on elements of Jitterbug, Charleston and Lindy Hop. Swing is a great social dance and is loads of fun. No partner or experience required!

Metalworking – Terrie Hoefer
Begin your exploration of metalsmithing by learning how to work with different types of metal, how to safely use tools, and techniques such as sawing, drilling, forming, chasing, annealing and riveting. Students will complete one or two projects depending on complexity. Pendants, earrings and bangle bracelets are just a few of the possibilities!

Fine Silver (Metal Clay) Jewelry – Rhonda Scott
Although metal clay looks and feels similar to clay, it becomes 99.9% silver after firing in a kiln. Stamp it, carve in it, sculpt it–the possibilities are endless! Learn to use this versatile and beautiful material to make a pendant or earrings.

Paint Your Own Pottery: Valentine’s Day Gifts
Join us for a fun exploration of techniques in “painting” bisque. Personalize a piece for your sweetheart or bestie Studio fee is $4 for ISU and $5 for public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick up, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Pre-registration with payment is not required but a call to reserve a spot is recommended.

Woodshop: Nesting Boxes – Dan Neubauer
Make a 6, 5 & 4 inch set of nesting boxes. Part of the class will utilize hand tools to learn a traditional hand joinery technique. Then learn to use the machinery to make boxes efficiently. The Woodshop Orientation class is helpful, but not required for this class.

Oil Painting – Sara Merritt
Through this class, students will become comfortable using oil paint, and gain confidence in color mixing, composition, and paint application. It is meant for both beginners who have never painted before and more experienced painters who would like to try a new perspective and get a chance to paint with others.
