AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State University College of Design will host Maryland-based custom electric guitarmaker Peter Malinoski as a visiting artist-in-residence Feb. 3-7.

Malinoski has been creating boldy designed, great-sounding guitars for 25 years. During that time he has developed innovations that are unique to his guitars, which he calls “a step back and beyond the roots of electric guitars; they are about the hand-built techniques of a singular craftsman.” He will share examples of his work in a public presentation at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, in 2019 Morrill Hall.

During his residency, Malinoski will demonstrate the making of an electric guitar from beginning to end. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day in the industrial design shop in the Armory on the Iowa State campus. The public is invited to drop by to observe. The new guitar will be featured in a free recital at 12 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in the ISU College of Design’s Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum (atrium).

Malinoski received a bachelor of arts in studio art from the University of Kentucky in 1988, a master of arts in functional design from Murray State University in 1991 and a master of fine arts in wood from Arizona State University in 1994. His work has been exhibited in fine art and fine craft festivals throughout the United States and has appeared in such publications as the Baltimore Sun, NICHE Magazine and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He is featured in “Electrified: The Art of the Contemporary Electric Guitar” by Robert Shaw (Sterling Signature, 2011).

Malinoski’s visit is co-sponsored by the College of Design, Department of Industrial Design, Department of Integrated Studio Arts and CODAC (College of Design Art Club). Read more about Malinoski’s guitars on his website, http://www.petermalinoskiart.com.
