Alice Daniels, 80, passed away, January 27, 2014 at home of natural causes. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 29 at Temple B’nai Jeshurun. Burial will follow at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.
Alice was born on July 8, 1933 in New York and grew up in Hyde Park on the south side of Chicago. Alice moved to Des Moines in 1952 to attend Drake University. She married Richard Daniels, and together had three children. Alice served her community in various ways, including being a principal and teacher at Temple B’nai Jeshurun religious school, member and past president of Temple sisterhood as well as a former Temple membership chairman. Alice wrote “Ask Alice” for the Des Moines Skywalker and the Temple Bulletin, Between the Aisles. She was the author of After the Flowers, a series of vignettes, about her life after Richard’s death in 1988. She worked at Smouse Opportunity School as a volunteer, a realtor with Iowa Realty and several retail stores including the Younkers French Room and Feldman’s Phase II. Several years after Richard’s death, she was fortunate to meet Larry Hackbarth, who has been her loving companion of 19 years. Together they had rich and enjoyable life, filled with many travels and cruises.
Alice is survived by her children, Marc (Adrienne) Daniels, Springfield, IL, Larry (Lisa) Daniels, Cleveland, OH and Suse (Greg) Cohen of Chariton, IA; six grandchildren, Isaak, Simon, Gillian, Richard, Talia and Sam; five step grandchildren, Elisa, Emily, Benjamin, Sarah and Jacob; brother, James (Ruthann) Grossman, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; nieces, Cynthia Grossman and Andrea Axlund; Larry Hackbarth and his family: three children and six grandchildren.
