Robert “Bob” Shelquist Carfrae, 70, of rural West Des Moines died at home Friday, January 24, 2014. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Rd. Bob’s wishes were to not have a public memorial service. His body will be cremated.
Bob was born March 1, 1943 to Robert J. Carfrae and Audrey J. Shelquist. He attended schools in Marshalltown and Carroll, graduating from Carroll High School in 1961. He attended Buena Vista University, and The University of Iowa, but was a lifelong Cyclone fan.
Bob and Deana Sheil were united in marriage on July 13, 1969. He worked in sales for Barton Solvents for 29 years, retiring in 1998. Bob was an active member of the Des Moines Woodworking Association and their woodturning group.
Bob is survived by his wife of 44 years, Deana Carfrae; his mother, Audrey J. Carfrae; children Scott Carfrae (Jenny), Kelly Aasmundstad (Paul), Jennifer Mann, Alex Carfrae (Tara Connolly), and Ben Carfrae, all of the Des Moines area; sisters Liz (Denny) Haines of Marion, Ia., Janet Bishop (Mike) of Solon, Ia., and Mary Culp (Matt) of Des Moines; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and treasured friends – all whom he loved dearly.
Bob is preceded in death by his father, Robert J. Carfrae and his brother, Bill Carfrae.
