Music for children

Join Natalie Steenson from the Iowa Youth Chorus’ Beginnings Early Childhood Music Program at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, for singing, dancing and instrument playing and learn how music benefits the young child. This program is for babies through age 5 and requires preregistration.

Bring your mobile device (smartphone, tablet or e-reader) to get advice and help installing the library’s apps for e-books, downloadable audiobooks and e-magazines. The class and apps are all free. Your gadget must have basic setup done (out of the box, set up, passwords entered, charged and know the basics) as a prerequisite to this class. You will need your library card and PIN, and you may need the password for your App Store on your device. Pre-register.

Furry Tales
Saturday, Feb. 1, 11 a.m.
Stop by the library to sign up for a 10-minute slot to read a favorite story to therapy dog Scout. Sharing stories with Scout is a fantastic way to practice reading skills and make a furry friend at the same time.

Afternoon Book Discussion
Monday, Feb. 3, 1 p.m.
We will discuss “The House Girl” by Tara Conklin. Copies of the book are available at the information desk.

Volunteens
Monday, Feb. 3, 4 p.m.
Teens can volunteer their time to help out with various library projects. Please stop by the library for an application form and have it signed by a parent or guardian prior to your first meeting.

Franklin Crafty Readers — Clifford visits the library

Clifford the Big Red Dog is coming to the Des Moines Public Library with his friend, Dan Wardell, from IPTV. Dan will read stories about Clifford’s adventures. Afterwards, children can meet Clifford and take pictures with him.
