Delbert Doyle Heuton, age 84, of Glidden, IA passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll, IA.
Born on January 12, 1930 in Carroll, IA, he was the son of Louis and Ada (Bushman) Heuton. Delbert is a lifelong resident of Glidden where he graduated from high school in 1947. He served in the United States Navy from 1951to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. He was married to Eva Mae Blum on November 20, 1955 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Three children were born to this union. Delbert and Eva then farmed northeast of Glidden before they moved into town in 1971. It was during this time that Delbert served as Mayor of Glidden for 21 years.
Delbert was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden. While he was a member at St. John’s Lutheran Church, he served as Sunday School Superintendant and sang in the choir. He was also a member of Merle Hay Post of the American Legion. He especially enjoyed the time spent with his family and friends. Delbert found great importance in his faith, family and friends. He valued the time he spent in the service and serving Glidden as Mayor.
Delbert is survived by three children: Jerilyn Hoppy and husband Gary of Interlaken, New York; Jacquelyn Hackett and husband Randy of Glidden; and Jeffrey Heuton and wife Cindy of Carroll; five grandchildren: Damion Hackett and wife Maria; Stephanie Buse and husband Todd; Taylor Hackett; Tyson Heuton; Nathan Heuton and wife Carrie; four great-grandchildren: Jasmine Buse, Madison Dahl, Ayden Dahl and Kylie Heuton; two sisters-in-law: Gladys Heuton of Rembrandt and Estherline Blum of Carroll; and by many special nieces and nephews.
Delbert was preceded in death by his wife Eva; three brothers: Virgil Heuton; Arnold Heuton and wife Mildred; and Merle Heuton and wife Grace.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 24, 2014, 10:30 AM, at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden with Reverend Alan Miller, officiating. Congregational hymns are How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace and The Old Rugged Cross. Casket bearers are Delbert’s grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers will be Chuck Best, Gary Hoppy, Russ Franzwa, Randy Hackett and Bruce Boehm. Interment with military honors will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery at Glidden by the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion. Visitation will be at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden on Thursday, January 23, 2014, after 5 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM. A memorial fund has been established and donations may be left at the funeral home or church.
