Maurice Fitzgerald, age 90, of Boone, died at the Eastern Star Masonic Home on January 17, 2014.
A Funeral Mass will be Thursday, January 23, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Maurice James Fitzgerald was born on the family farm in Boone County on March 18, 1923, the son of John and Margaret (Jordan) Fitzgerald. As a youth, he worked on the farm.
On December 29, 1962, he married Velda Stumpf in Pocahontas, Iowa.
Maurice was an auctioneer and began his career in May of 1948 when he attended the National Auctioneers Institute in Colfax, Iowa. He was a member of the first group that attended that school.
In 1951, Maurice started working for Taylor and Martin Auction Company in Fremont, Nebraska, selling purebred hogs.
In 1953, he became a field man for the National Spotted Hog Bulletin in Omaha, Nebraska, and traveled several states visiting farms for swine sales.
In 1959, Maurice became sales manager of the Iowa State Spotted Hog Association, holding that position until 1979.
He moved from swine sales to general auctions and in the early 1970s, with the help of his wife, Velda, he established his own auctioneering and clerking service, Maurice Fitzgerald’s Auction Co. serving Boone and surrounding areas.
He also loved attending and selling at the Iowa State Fair and in 2001, Maurice retired after 50 years of sales.
He was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart of which he was an usher, the National Auctioneers Association, and a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Leo Council #814.
He and Velda enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and dancing.
Maurice and Velda provided the money to construct the accessibility ramp at their church.
He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Joe, Charles, Bill, Frank, and John; and nieces and nephews, Bobby Fitzgerald, Julie Fitzgerald, Rev. Timothy Fitzgerald, Luann Anderson, and Shannon Shearer.
He is survived by his wife Velda of Boone; nieces and nephews, Mike Fitzgerald and wife Marge of Ames, Pat Fitzgerald and wife Brenda of Boone, Mary Jo Tungesvik and husband Loren of Radcliff, and Geralyn McVeigh and husband Jim of Springfield, Tennessee; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Wednesday from 2 until 8 p.m. where a Vigil Service will be at 6:30 p.m. Velda and family will be present at the funeral chapel beginning at 5:30 p.m.
On Thursday, visitation will continue at the funeral chapel from 8 until 10 a.m.
