Maurice was an auctioneer and began his career in May of 1948 when he attended the National Auctioneers Institute in Colfax, Iowa. He was a member of the first group that attended that school.

In 1951, Maurice started working for Taylor and Martin Auction Company in Fremont, Nebraska, selling purebred hogs.

In 1959, Maurice became sales manager of the Iowa State Spotted Hog Association, holding that position until 1979.

He moved from swine sales to general auctions and in the early 1970s, with the help of his wife, Velda, he established his own auctioneering and clerking service, Maurice Fitzgerald’s Auction Co. serving Boone and surrounding areas.

He also loved attending and selling at the Iowa State Fair and in 2001, Maurice retired after 50 years of sales.

He was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart of which he was an usher, the National Auctioneers Association, and a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Leo Council #814.

He and Velda enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and dancing.

Maurice and Velda provided the money to construct the accessibility ramp at their church.
