June 29, 1955 – January 8, 2014
Janice Anne Brubaker of Johnston died Jan. 8 of heart disease at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was 58.
Jan was born June 29, 1955, in Peoria, Ill., to William and Joan Crowley. She grew up in Pontiac, Ill. She received a bachelor’s degree from Quincy College in Quincy, Ill., and master’s degree from Indiana University.
Jan was first and foremost a loving mother to her two sons, Chris and Patrick. Nothing made her happier than the many joys from their lives and she was always very proud of the great young men that they have become.
Jan was also a loving and patient wife to Randy. They were married in 1981 in Pontiac, Ill., and enjoyed more than 32 years of happiness, supporting each other.
Most of Jan’s career was spent as a dedicated high school guidance counselor, first at Regina High School in Iowa City and for the past 26 years at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines. She took pride in serving her Lord, the church and every student who had a need, however large or small. She was blessed by working with great colleagues whose friendships she treasured. Over the years, the Dowling community — her colleagues in the counseling department, faculty members, administrators and thousands of students and their parents — became Jan’s extended family.
Jan is survived by her husband, Randy; her sons Christopher and Patrick; her mother, Joan Crowley, of Pontiac, Ill., two sisters, Sue Kelley of Morton, Ill., and Nancy (Nick) Milhauser of Pontiac, Ill.; and brother Patrick (Christine) Crowley of Pontiac, Ill. She is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews whose successes she also took great pride in, and her in-laws, Dora and Bill Brubaker of Johnston. She was preceded in death by her father, William Crowley.
Her entire family extends a heartfelt thank you to the many doctors who cared for Jan over the years. She so appreciated your personal touches. Without your good work, we wouldn’t have had Jan with us for as many years as we did.
A funeral mass was celebrated at Saturday, Jan. 11, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial services will be private.
Jan requested no flowers. Instead, she suggested memorial gifts to an educational fund to be established for her sons or to Dowling Catholic High School, designated for its new chapel construction.
