Small-town appeal

Debra and Kevin McCrea and their children love their large backyard and small-town convenience in Grimes.

When Debra McCrea and husband Kevin chose their home in Grimes, it was a compromise. Debra, familiar with city life in West Des Moines, enjoyed the suburban feel of the neighborhood surrounding 705 S.W. Kennybrook Drive.  Kevin, from Lakeville, found small-town appeal. The compromise worked well for the parents of three, who own a Kennybrook Estates home built in 1994.

“You have the perfect mix of city life and small-town life. Not too many people that you don’t know your neighbors, but not so small you know everybody,” says Debra McRae.

The three-bedroom, three-bath estate rests in blue skied suburbia, a basketball hoop in the driveway, just waiting to be used. Debra says her family, more so the kids, would never part with that hoop. Even if they have to dig through concrete, that thing is coming with, wherever the McCreas end up.

Entering the living room, a black-tiled wood-burning fireplace grabs your attention. Oak shelving blends seamlessly with the laminate wood flooring, giving the entire first floor a look of elegance.  The grand stairway and vaulted ceilings further add to main level appeal.

It opens to a multi-level deck, one side covered for backyard grilling and a lower level where the kids can play. A backyard shed provides safe haven and electricity for wood working projects.

South Prairie Elementary is easily reached by foot, convenient for Debra who runs a joint daycare out of the home. Needless to say, the McCreas need all the space they can get. Their large fenced-in plot and two-tiered jungle gym help Debra keep the kids entertained.

“My favorite part of the entire house is the backyard,” she says. “It has been just awesome for the kids.”
