Leon Joseph Swift, D.O., 55, died of natural causes at his home Sunday, January 12, 2014. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Friday, January 17, 2014 at Westover Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Private family burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Leon was born May 8, 1958 in Mason City, Iowa to James Gordon and Loretta (Olinger) Swift. He was a graduate of Valley High School, Drake University and Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. Leon practiced as a pharmacist until he became a family physician. He practiced as a family physician in Arlington, Texas until his retirement in 2000.

Memberships include Lutheran Church of Hope, Iowa Pharmacy Association, AOA (American Osteopathic Association) and ACOFP (American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians).

Leon’s pride and joy was his son, Joseph Tanner. He loved spending time with him talking, texting, playing video games and golfing. He was an avid Hawkeye and Dallas Stars fan. He enjoyed playing golf, volleyball and watching any sports on television. Leon also enjoyed socializing, fishing and searching for geodes.

Survivors include his son, Joseph Tanner Swift of Arlington, TX; mother, Loretta O. Swift of West Des Moines; siblings: Kathy (Tom) Bawek of Bloomington, MN, Jim (Patty) Swift of Johnston, Elodie Trebon of Windsor Heights, Denise (Bob) Johnson of Indianola, twin sister, Lynn Schnittker of Johnston and Stephanie Swift of Johnston; and several nieces and nephews. Leon was preceded in death by his father and his nephew, Kenny Trebon.

Leon was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
