Volunteers work to package meals at the 2013 Grimes Hunger Fight.

Grimes United Methodist Church will host its second annual Grimes Hunger Fight on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 15, at the church. This community event is a partnership with Meals From the Heartland, a Des Moines-based nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting hunger both in Iowa and in foreign countries like Haiti and the Philippines.

Last year the Grimes Hunger Fight at Grimes UMC drew more than 400 volunteers who put together 62,000 meals for the hungry. Even though the event is held at the church, its organizers stress that it’s a community-first endeavor.

“Last year the Girl Scouts helped out, other churches came and even individuals in the community who heard about it and wanted to be involved,” says Dan Koestner, one of the event’s organizers. “The goal is for everyone to come together and make an impact with just a few hours of their time.”

Stations of 10 to 12 people work together at the event to package meals ready for delivery. Last year the group put together nutritious rice and soy-based meals, though this year they plan on putting together a macaroni and cheese meal to appeal more to local food recipients. Though most people don’t realize it, Dan Koestner says, many Iowans have a problem with food insecurity. According to Meals From the Heartland, one in eight Iowans are food insecure, meaning they don’t know where their next meal will come from, while one in five Iowa children do not get enough to eat.

Community members interested in participating in the Grimes Hunger Fight need to register in advance on the Grimes United Methodist website, www.GrimesUMC.com. Each meal costs about 25 cents to put together, so the church is also asking for donations from both participants and community members at large.

Registrants can make a donation when they sign up for the event on the web, or they can bring money with them the morning of the event. Donations may also be sent to the church at Grimes United Methodist Church, 801 W. 1st St., P.O. Box 737, Grimes, IA 50111

If you send a donation via mail, designate it as a donation intended for the Fight Hunger event.
