Steven R. Smith passed away on January 12, 2014, at Adel Acres Care Center after a four year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 15, at Iles-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Brethren Cemetery there.

Steven was born in Des Moines, Iowa on March 6, 1954, the son of Burdette “Bud” and Edna (Marquardt) Smith. He graduated from Adel High School in 1972. Following graduation he joined the Iowa National Guard for two enlistments and was a member of the Camp Dodge unit. After completing his basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ, he returned to Iowa where he worked at Can-Tex Industries, the Perry Pork Plant and finally at Sioux City Brick and Tile in Adel, where he was a forklift operator for many years until his illness forced his retirement.

Steve’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, trap-shooting, collecting guns, reading, and watching the history channel. He was a board member and officer for the Raccoon Valley Sportsman’s Club for many years.

Steve is survived by his father, Bud Smith of Adel, his sister, Julie (Paul) Larsen of Titonka, IA, niece Erica Larsen of Algona, nephew, Martin Larsen of Owatonna, MN, his aunts, Shirley Rundle of Apache Junction, AZ and Shirley Marquardt of Normal, IL; his uncle, Stanley Marquardt of Olathe, KS and eight cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 pm Tuesday at Iles-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the Raccoon Valley Sportsman’s Club or the American Cancer Society. Online condolences will be welcomed at
